Time for those winter vacations to begin! Just a reminder to check your travel coverage before you leave for your vacation. Most group plans have some travel coverage for emergencies out of the country medical. These plans cover sudden and unexpected events. If you have a pre-existing condition this coverage may not cover you should you become ill or injured with a injury/illness that is related to that pre-existing condition. Most plans have stability clauses in them so if you have been stable for a certain period of time, but it is important to check those dates.
Some other things to consider are the length of the trip and what it actually covers. Most plans have a maximum number of days they will cover an individual while out of country. The most common is 60 days but please be sure and double check your contract before you leave. This period will be extended if you are hurt while out of country and remain in emergent care. This coverage is intended for medical emergency and does not extend to things like lost or stolen baggage or trip interruption or delay.
